WiFi & Friend Codes Guide

In order to visit a town other than your own, you will need a Friend Code. You must have completed all of the jobs for Tom Nook before you will be allowed to get a Friend Code.

To obtain your code, go through the town gate and walk up to Copper (the dog on the right side). When you do, you should see the option to select “Friend Code.” You must be able to connect to Wi-Fi in order to get your code. If you do not have a wireless connection in your home via your internet service or a Nintendo USB hub, you may not get your code. Once Copper has connected to Nintendo Wi-Fi, he will give you your code.

Your Friend Code will consist of 12 numbers grouped into 4-digits divided by a hyphen. (xxxx-xxxx-xxxx) This is the number you will give to others when you wish to have them visit you or you wish to visit them.

To enter a friend into your friend roster, point the Wii remote at the TV screen.and select the heart icon. Next select “Register a Friend.” You will then be given a numbered keypanel where you can enter the Friend Code. Click on “Confirm’ when you are sure the number is correct. Next you will be able to enter your friend’s name, then his town, and finally on the last screen any comments you may want to enter regarding him. This is a good place to enter their forum name if it is different from their Wi-Fi name. You must click on “Confirm” on the last screen when you are finished. Your friend should now show up in your Friend Roster. (Note: even if you spell your friend’s name or town incorrectly the game will fix that for you. The most important thing is to get the numbered code entered correctly.)

After you and your friend have both entered each other’s codes, you are ready to WiFi. Decide if you are going to have them come to your town or if you will go to their town. Go back and talk to Copper and select the proper response. “Open the Gate” will allow any friends that have you registered to come over to your town. “I want to go out” will allow you to visit any of your friends you have their gate open. He will then ask whether you will to connect using the Nintendo WiFi or DS. Select Nintendo WiFi. After a few seconds (or longer at times) he will present you with a list of towns you may visit. Copper will automatically save before allowing anyone to WiFi.

When you are finished visiting another town you simply go back to their gate and talk to Copper. He will then save the game and return you to your town. If you are the host and your friends are in your town, you may save at any time by pointing the Wii remote at the TV screen and clicking on the fountain pen icon in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Here you will be given the choice to either save and continue, or to “party over.” “Party Over” will save and send everyone back home, as well as close your gate. If someone leaves your town and you do not use the “Party Over” feature, you will have to go back and speak to Copper for him to close your gate.

You may wish to open your gate any time you play to allow any of the friends on your roster to drop by for surprise visits.

Once you have entered a few friends, you may notice that some have a solid heart next to their name, some have a heart outline next to their name, and some have nothing next to their name. Any friend with a solid heart next to their name is someone you have Wi-Fi’d with (they have come to your town or you have gone to theirs). A heart outline means that you have each added the other, but have not connected yet. If there is no heart symbol next to the name, they have not added you to their roster.

You may only send mail to those you have actually WiFi’d with – those with a solid heart next to their name. This type of mail will take longer to deliver and there is a slight change that it will be lost due to WiFi errors.

If you receive constant WiFi errors, you can look up the number on Nintendo.com for additional help, or contact Nintendo.
