e-Reader FAQ

If you've ever wondered exactly what an E-Reader is, what it does, or how you can use it, you've come to the right place. In this FAQ, I will explain everything that you will need to know about setting up and using your E-Reader, and more importantly, how to use it with Animal Crossing.

Okay, I'm lost. What's an E-Reader?

An E-Reader is an accessory released in 2002 by Nintendo to be used with the Gameboy Advance, and Gameboy Advance SP systems. The E-Reader is used for scanning special E-Cards that are also sold by Nintendo. These cards feature a variety of your favourite Nintendo characters. You can purchase an E-Reader at your local EB Games, GameStop, or other video game store of your choosing.

So what does this have to do with Animal Crossing?

In 2002, Nintendo released its first set of Animal Crossing E-Cards. Animal Crossing fans everywhere scurried to collect as many of these cards as they could, for these cards held special items that could be used in their Animal Crossing towns. Nintendo has since released four sets of these cards, each with it's own special set of items.

What kind of items are on these cards?

There are several types of Animal Crossing E-Cards. The most common cards are the Character Cards. These cards will get you three items. The first item you will get by scanning the E-Card at the Post Office in your town, the second item you will get by mailing the code on the back of the card to a villager in your town, and the third item you will get by mailing the code on the back, to the person on the card. Of course you can only do this if the person on the card is in your town.

Game Cards are E-Cards that when scanned, allow you to play a special game on your GBA. Unlike the other types of cards, Game Cards are not used for getting items in the actual Animal Crossing game. Sibling Cards are cards with two characters on them, the only thing that makes these cards different is the fact that they come with two codes on the back. The other types of cards include Design Cards, Town Tune Cards, and NES Cards.

Alright, so I've purchased my E-Reader, and I've got my Animal Crossing E-Cards, what's next?

Firstly, you're going to need to connect the E-Reader to your Gameboy Advance, or Gameboy Advance SP. You will also need a Gameboy Advance/Gamecube Connection Cable, which can be bought at any video games store. Once you have your Gameboy with E-Reader connected to your Gamecube in the second controller port (your controller has to go in the first), then you're ready to get started!

Next, you will have to start up your Gamecube, and boot up your Animal Crossing town. Then you're ready to prepare your E-Reader for communication with the Gamecube. You can do this by simply turning your GBA on. On the selection menu, make sure that you select the Communication option, and then select Nintendo Gamecube. Once you make sure that all the connections are set up properly, you then press the A button and wait to be connected to your Gamecube.

Once you have the GBA ready to go, you will need to go to a certain location in your Animal Crossing town. This location will vary depending on what type of card you are going to be scanning. For Character, Sibling, and NES Cards, you will need to visit the Post Office and use the E-Machine located there. For Design Cards, you will need to visit the Able Sister's and talk to them to scan your card. To scan your Town Tune Cards you will have to visit the Town Tune Board, which is located right outside the Post Office.

What?!? It didn't work! What did I do wrong?

There could have been a number of things wrong, but it was most likely an error in the actual scanning of the card. Make sure that you are at the proper location to scan the card, and then talk to the person/object that allows you to scan the card. After you have been prompted to scan the card, you will want to slide the data bar of the card through the E-Reader at a steady pace. If you go too fast, you will most likely get an error message. If the card goes through, you will get your item, but if it doesn't, keep trying!

I hope after reading this FAQ, you have a better understanding of the E-Reader, its capabilities, and what it brings to the world of Animal Crossing. If you have any further questions, you can e-mail me at totey@megadoomer.com.

Poll
Have you turned your AC:WW town into a Water World?
 Yes, yay for Nintendo Power!
Eh, I came up with a world design of my own.
Nope, I don't have the time to do that kind of thing.
 Water World...?
