The local shop is run by a raccoon named Tom Nook. Tom is also the local loanbroker, and the one you start off in debt to. His original shop, Nook's Cranny, is very tiny and holds hardly any salable goods. The more money you spend in his shop, the larger it becomes. His shop will grow to Nook 'n Go after you spend 25,000 and Nookway once you spend 65,000. The final stage, Nookington's, will come after you spend 150,000 and have a friend from another village come visit the shop. The bigger Tom's shop gets, the more and wider variety of items he will offer to sell you.
Items available only from Tom Nook: saplings, paint, candy, flower Seeds, signs.
If you trade items, or get a passcode you can tell it to Tom to get the item. You can also exchange one of your items for a passcode at his shop. The last day of every month is a raffle, Tom will have 3 prizes to be won. These prizes, aside from during the raffle, can be extremely hard to find. You get one try at a prize for each set of five tickets you have.
Items that give you tickets: clothes, umbrellas, furniture, wallpaper, carpet
Items that don't give you tickets: stationary, paint, candy, flowers, saplings, signs
One of the more important functions of Tom's shop is buying things from you. Some items cannot be sold to Tom, like uncleaned fossils. Other items, like tires, he will take off your hands for no monetary compensation. Tom will only pay you a quarter of the actual value of the object so be careful not to make mistakes. Some items you sell you will not be able to buy back, always check your catalog before selling one of a kind items.
If you talk to Tom you will be able to see your catalog. Your catalog contains all the items you have had in your possession before. Items marked as "Not for sale" cannot be repurchased. These include: rare NES games, Gracie clothes, Wendell wallpaper, Saharah carpets, items from Gulliver, and many more.
Tom also holds bargain sales two or three times a month. He will give out free balloons at all his sales. However, only a limited amount of merchandise will be available for purchase.
Finally, you can check with Tom for the daily fluctuating price of turnips. If you decide to sell Tom will take them off your hands. Make sure you sell them by the end of the week or they will go rotten.

The Wishing Well
Hours: Available all the time
The wishing well is the center of many festival events. It can also give you advice on how to make your town a better place. The wishing well will usually give you a cryptic message followed by an acre number. If you are told that your village is "perfect" for two weeks you will receive a golden axe. If the wishing well tells you that the area has "little green" you should plant trees. If it comments on "shadows" you should cut down trees. If things are satisfactory, or they could be better, thin out your trees. Although weeds do not seem to play as large a role as originally thought it never hurts to thin them out. Make sure you plant flowers as well, they make your town look better and attract insects.
The wishing well can also allow you to apologize for items you cannot deliver. This is helpful for villagers that move away. You may have to wait several days before you are allowed to apologize for an item. If you are allowed to apologize you can leave the item there and free up your item slot.
