Native Fruit

Each town starts out with one type of fruit tree. This is the fruit that is native to your town. You may have any of the above as your native fruit except for coconuts. If you stand facing the tree (with nothing in your hands) and press the A button, you can shake the 3 pieces of fruit off of the tree. Fruit will grown back in 3 days on a mature tree. You native fruit can be sold to Tom Nook for 100 bells each.

Foreign Fruit

Any fruit which is not found in your original town is considered foreign fruit. Foreign fruits can be sold to Tom Nook for 500 bells each, and so it can be quite profitable to grow them.

Ways to Obtain Foreign Fruit

You may get foreign fruit most easily by trading with others on wifi.

Write a very simple letter to a villager with a piece of fruit attached and you may get one in return. Coconuts will occasionally wash up on your beach

Growing Fruit

You can plant and fruit to make new fruit trees. Using any shovel, dig a hole and then go to your inventory and click on the fruit you wish to plant. It will give you the option to plant it. You do not have to water a fruit tree to make it grow. However, the normal rules apply for this tree to grow it cannot be next to buildings or too close to walls. There are also some places that the game will simply not allow trees to grow. One rule of thumb that works most of the time, is to cut down and existing non-productive tree and plant a fruit tree in its place. Trees take 4 days from planting until maturity.

Coconuts will only grow in the bottom acre of your town. A good place seems to be just above the line between the sand and dirt or grass. Although it has been reported that they will grow up to 5 or 6 spaces above that.

It is suggested that as soon as you obtain any foreign fruit that you plant trees so that you will have a never-ending supply.
